Berliner Weisse is a light-bodied German wheat-beer style known for lively carbonation and refreshing tartness. Goat Island’s Blood Orange Berliner Weisse builds on that tradition with a vivid orange-pink color and lush sweet-orange aroma.

Where Berliner Weisse began

The style traces its roots to Berlin and was established by the 16th century. Its pale color, spritzy carbonation, and crisp acidity eventually earned it the nickname “Champagne of the North.” The combination made Berliner Weisse especially appealing as a warm-weather beer.

What does Berliner Weisse taste like?

Tartness is the defining feature, but a good Berliner Weisse is more than simply sour. A soft wheat character supports the acidity, while high carbonation keeps each sip bright and cleansing. Traditional examples are usually light in body and finish very dry.

Fruit additions are a natural fit for the style. Blood orange brings citrus aroma, gentle sweetness, and color while keeping the refreshing wheat-beer foundation intact.

How it is traditionally served

In Berlin, the beer is often served with a small portion of flavored syrup, commonly raspberry or woodruff, so the drinker can choose the desired level of sweetness. Modern craft brewers also work fruit directly into the beer, creating interpretations that range from peach and passion fruit to cucumber and herbs.

Food pairings

The beer’s acidity and carbonation make it a lively partner for salads, seafood, light cheeses, grilled vegetables, and other foods that benefit from a crisp counterpoint. It is equally at home as a stand-alone patio beer on a warm Alabama afternoon.
